Sula Support

20 questions, answered.

Hi. Sula is made by one person, Jack Steelberg.

Email: Support email opens with the App Store launch

When you write, it helps to include your iPhone model, your iOS version (Settings → General → About), and what you were doing when the problem happened. A screenshot or screen recording is even better.

Frequently asked questions#

Getting started#

6 questions

1. How do I start?

Open Sula and just talk. Tap the button at the bottom and say whatever is on your mind: a plan, a worry, a deadline, an idea, how the day went. Or tap the keyboard to type. The only setup is signing in with Apple and saying yes to AI on the welcome screens, so Sula can sort and reply. Sula quietly files it all: events and tasks go on your day, new subjects become threads, and side details become notes in the right place. You'll see a small receipt each time, like "Added: Exam · Fri 5 PM".

The more you tell it, the more useful it gets. Most people find it clicks after a few days of talking to it the way you would to a friend who never forgets.

2. How do I ask Sula something?

Pull down the black bar at the top of the screen, the one that grows out of the Dynamic Island. That bar is Sula. You can pull it down from any screen and ask anything you've ever told it: "When's my dentist appointment?", "What did Sam say about the trip?", "Where was I last on vacation?" It answers from your own memories, with your photos when they're relevant.

3. What's the morning briefing?

Overnight, while your phone charges, Sula reads back through yesterday. It writes a short summary, updates its deeper notes about your life, and leaves you a briefing for the morning. The briefing includes quick questions you can answer with one tap, like picking a time for something you mentioned without one.

For the briefing to appear, plug your phone in overnight and keep Background App Refresh on for Sula (Settings → General → Background App Refresh). See question 19 if it doesn't show up.

4. How do I correct Sula, or make it forget something?

Just say it.

  • "Forget that" removes the last thing you said from Sula's memory.
  • Corrections work the way they would with a person: "Actually, the exam is Thursday, not Friday."
  • "Pin School" keeps a topic at the top. "Quiet RYZN for now" stops a topic from coming up in answers and briefings.

You can also delete any thread yourself, or move a conversation into a different thread.

5. How do I use the camera?

In a conversation, tap the black bar at the top. It grows into a camera. Take a picture and it goes straight to Sula. You can also pick a photo you already have. Snap a flyer and the date lands on your day. Snap a whiteboard and Sula keeps the notes. Taking photos and having them filed works on every plan. Photo answers and understanding in chat come with Sula Plus and Max.

6. Can I bring over what I've told ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Yes. Go to Settings → Import anything:

  1. Tap Copy the prompt.
  2. Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and paste the prompt into a new chat. It will write out what it knows about you.
  3. Copy its whole answer, come back to Sula, and tap Paste its answer.

Sula shows you a preview of what it found before anything is added, so you can bring it all in, or tap Save for later and come back to it. You can also import from a file instead. Sula never signs in to your other AI accounts; it only reads what you paste.

Privacy#

3 questions

7. Where is my data stored, and who can see it?

On your iPhone. Your conversations, threads, notes, timeline and briefings are stored on your device, not on a Sula server. I can't read them.

To reply and organize, Sula sends what you say to two AI providers, Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini), but only after you say yes on the consent screen. Photos you send from Sula's camera go too, and so do your upcoming calendar events and birthdays if you've connected Calendar or Birthdays. If you say no, Sula still saves everything and AI stays off. Your Photos library, your sleep data (unless you switch it on separately), the rest of your contacts and your audio are never sent to them. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.

8. Does Sula train AI on my data?

No. Sula doesn't train any AI models, and both AI providers are used through their paid business services, whose terms say they don't train on your data. There are no ads and no tracking in Sula, and your data is never sold.

9. How do I delete my data or my account?

  • One thing: tell Sula to "forget that", or delete the thread.
  • Everything, but keep your account: Settings → Your data → Erase everything on this phone.
  • Your account and everything in it: Settings → Your data → Delete my account.

Deleting your account doesn't cancel your subscription. Apple manages that: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. You can also email me from the address on your account and I'll delete it for you.

Plans and purchases#

4 questions

10. What do the plans include?

Every install comes with 5 free answers to try Sula. Without a plan after that, everything you say is still saved. Sorting and replies pick up again with a plan:

Plus includes everything in Lite, and Max includes everything in Plus. Every plan can take photos with Sula's camera and file them. What counts toward your monthly number is replies and answers: Sula's replies in a conversation, answers when you pull down to ask, and photo reads. The morning briefing and nightly read are included and don't use up your allowance.

11. What happens if I use up my replies for the month?

Nothing you say is lost. Sula keeps saving and sorting everything, and your day, threads and timeline keep working. Replies and answers pause until your allowance resets on the first of next month, or you can move up a plan at any time in Settings → You → Change plan.

12. How do I change or cancel my plan?

In Sula, go to Settings → You → Change plan → Manage subscription. Or on your iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Sula. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period. If you're on the Sula Plus yearly free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the 7 days end and you won't be charged.

Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

13. I got a new phone, or reinstalled Sula. How do I get my plan back?

Open Sula, go to Settings → You → See plans, and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe.

Your plan comes back with Restore purchases. Your memories live on your iPhone, so they move to a new phone with your iPhone backup: restore from an iCloud or computer backup, or use Quick Start when you set up the new phone. If you delete Sula without a backup, what was in it can't be recovered. Optional sync is coming.

Connections#

3 questions

14. What are Connections?

Connections let Sula see a little more of your life, so your days and answers are richer. Each one is off until you switch it on in Settings → Connections, and iOS asks for permission only at that moment. You can turn any of them off again at any time.

  • Photos: your Favorites album only, read on your phone, shown on your days and in answers.
  • Sleep: how long you slept, from Apple Health. Read only, and kept out of the AI unless you turn on a separate switch.
  • Calendar: your own calendars, shown on Today and Timeline.
  • Birthdays: from your contacts, shown in Coming up.
  • Weather: the real weather on your day, using your approximate location.

15. Can Sula read my email?

Not yet. Email is coming. When it does, it will be a connection you switch on yourself, like the others, and this page and the Privacy Policy will say exactly how it works first.

16. Why don't I see all my photos?

Sula only looks at your Favorites album, so your days show your best shots, not every screenshot and receipt. To add a photo, open it in the Photos app and tap the heart. If you see no photos at all, check that Photos is on in Settings → Connections, and that Sula has access in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Sula.

Troubleshooting#

4 questions

17. The microphone isn't working.

  1. Check iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Sula is on.
  2. Check iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Speech Recognition → Sula is on.
  3. Make sure no other app is using the microphone (a phone or video call, a voice memo recording).
  4. If you're using AirPods or a Bluetooth headset, try once with them disconnected.
  5. Close Sula completely (swipe it away in the app switcher) and open it again.
  6. If dictation is slow or not working, check your connection. Some languages need the internet for speech recognition.

You can always type instead: tap the keyboard next to the microphone.

18. Sula isn't replying, or says AI is off.

  • If you chose "Not now" on the AI consent screen, AI features are off. Turn them on in Settings → AI → Use AI.
  • Sula's AI runs through its own server, which needs Sign in with Apple. If you skipped signing in, go to Settings → You → Sign in or make an account → Continue with Apple. On an email account, sign out there first (everything you've said stays on your phone), then sign in with Apple.
  • If you've used your 5 free answers, or your monthly allowance, see questions 10 and 11.
  • Check your internet connection. Saving what you say works offline; replies need the internet.

19. My morning briefing didn't show up.

The nightly read runs when iOS gives Sula time overnight, which works best when:

  • your phone is plugged in overnight,
  • Background App Refresh is on for Sula (Settings → General → Background App Refresh),
  • Low Power Mode is off,
  • you opened Sula at least once the day before, and
  • you said at least a few things that day.

iOS decides exactly when background work runs, so occasionally a night is skipped. Sula will catch up the next time it can.

20. Sleep or weather isn't showing.

  • Sleep: Sula reads sleep that's already in Apple Health, from your iPhone, Apple Watch or another sleep app. Check that Health has sleep data for last night, and that Sula is allowed to read it: Health app → your profile → Apps → Sula.
  • Weather: check that Weather is on in Settings → Connections, and that Location for Sula is set to "While Using the App" in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Sula.
